Zen
Cole Norton’s work revolves around the concepts of Zen, and the broad range of qualities we all harbor; light and dark, courage and fear, strength and weakness, Yin and Yang. Ever present in the work is a focus on the life forces of ourselves and of the world.

Sango:
It is this combination of peaceful calm and sharp beauty which reminded me of Coral. I imagine a calm and warm sea, and just under the surface are ancient corals. They are delicate, but can cut like a razor. And they are bright and beautiful to behold.
I relate to her dedication to her path as a Geiko.
珊瑚
和紙、金箔、墨、朱、孔雀石、2019年作
芸妓まめ柳を見たときに感じたのは心落ち着く穏やかさと、鋭い美しさ。温かく静かな海の下に在るのは、太古より存在する珊瑚。海底の底に佇む繊細だが鋭利な鋭さを持つ珊瑚を思わせ、それは、目にも美しく、明るい光のようでした。
コールは、芸妓さんの中に、美しさだけでなく、日々のお稽古の積み重ねの先に、芸道、美を極めてゆく芸妓の意思や姿に共感し、そうありたいと思いながら、その姿を描くのだと話をします。
京都祇園で何度も芸妓さんを描かせて頂きました。描かせてくださった祇園坂田様、そしてご縁を繋いでくださった白浪先生、玉泉寺様、本当にありがとうございました。心より御礼申し上げます。

Source depicts the source of creation. The figure is both creative inspiration and symbolizes the source of all human life as being born from the female form.
Emanating energy, her hand lightly points towards Hara, the center of our ki, and source of our birth. The flow of form and color is much like that of a Nebula, the birthplace of stars and of all the elements we are made from.

この作品は、創作の源となるものを描いたもので、創作のインスピレーションと、
女性の身体から生まれゆく生命の源を象徴化したものである。
エネルギーを発しながら軽やかに腹部を示す指。
腹部は、”氣”の中心であり、そして私たちの生命の紀元である。流れるような身体や色合いは、様々な要素が漂い、混じり、
そこから新たな星が生まれゆく星雲なのだ。
